Stop Sneezing This Fall: A Proven Guide to Lasting Allergy Relief
Fall allergies can keep you from enjoying Florida’s cooler weather, but they don’t have to. Learn how to manage seasonal allergies, reduce your symptoms, and find lasting relief so you can enjoy everything fall has to offer.

For many people, cooler temperatures don't bring relief from allergy symptoms; instead, they  bring a new set of triggers.

While much of the country sees allergy season winding down in the fall, Florida’s warm climate and high humidity allow allergens like ragweed, mold, and dust mites to linger into fall and even early winter. That means sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and sinus pressure can continue long after summer ends.

But there’s no need to suffer through another allergy season. With the right combination of prevention, treatment, and expert care, you can keep  your symptoms under control and enjoy the cooler weather outside.

At Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology Associates in Tampa and Brandon, Florida, our providers  create personalized treatment plans that target the source of your allergies, not just your symptoms.

Here’s what you need to know about Florida’s fall allergy season and how to find lasting relief.

Florida’s fall allergy triggers

Florida’s warm temperature and frequent rainfall create the ideal environment for many common allergens.

During the fall, ragweed pollen reaches its peak, while increased moisture encourages mold growth both indoors and outdoors. Dust mites also thrive in Florida’s humid climate, making them a year-round problem that often worsens during the fall months.

Because fall also overlaps with cold and flu season, you may mistake allergy symptoms for a longer cold. However, allergies typically persist for weeks without causing a fever.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sneezing
  • Congestion
  • Itchy eyes or throat
  • Sinus pressure
  • A sometimes persistent cough
  • Poor sleep

When left untreated, allergies may increase your risk of sinus infections and asthma symptoms  and interfere with your daily activities. Early treatment can help you feel better sooner and reduce the risk of complications.

Simple ways to reduce allergen exposure

One of the most effective ways to manage allergies is to reduce exposure to the allergens that trigger your symptoms. If you’re not sure what’s causing your allergies, allergy testing can help find your specific triggers so you can take steps to avoid them.

Since environmental allergies are most common in the fall, we recommend monitoring air quality and pollen counts and staying indoors when quality is poor and counts are high. Keeping your windows and doors closed can also help keep allergens from getting inside. Run your air conditioner to keep your home comfortable, but replace the filters regularly.

If you do go outside, shower, wash your hair, and change your clothes upon returning inside to avoid bringing pollen in with you. Clean damp areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms regularly to help prevent mold growth.

Even small changes to your daily routine can significantly reduce your allergy exposure.

Treatments for fall allergies

Avoiding allergens is important, but eliminating exposure completely is nearly impossible. Fortunately, several treatments can help keep symptoms under control, including:

  • Antihistamines
  • Saline nasal sprays or rinses
  • Nasal corticosteroid spray
  • Decongestants

If you experience allergy symptoms every fall, starting treatment a week or two before the season starts may help prevent symptoms from becoming severe.

Immunotherapy for lasting relief

If medications provide only temporary relief or if your symptoms worsen every year, you may want to consider immunotherapy.

Also called allergy shots, immunotherapy gradually trains your immune system to become less sensitive to the allergens that trigger your symptoms. Over time, this can reduce or eliminate your allergic reactions.

We offer immunotherapy for many fall — and year-round — allergens, including:

  • Ragweed and other pollens
  • Mold
  • Pet dander
  • Dust mites
  • Cockroaches

Treatment consists of a series of shots containing small amounts of your allergen, allowing your immune system to gradually build tolerance for long-lasting relief.

When to see an allergist

If your cold seems to last for weeks, keeps returning, or doesn’t improve with over-the-counter (OTC) medications, your “cold” may be allergies.

An allergy evaluation can find the underlying cause of your symptoms and help you avoid unnecessary discomfort. We do skin patch testing to pinpoint your triggers and create personalized plans that fit your life and provide the relief you need.
