New Year, New Lungs: 3 Resolutions for Better Breathing in 2026
New year, new lungs? Whether you have a lung condition or not, resolving to improve lung health can help you breathe better. Experts share better breathing resolutions you should include on your list this year.

As we flip the calendar to the new year, many people focus on eating better and becoming more active. But if you struggle with a breathing disorder, it’s worth adding lung health to your list of New Year’s resolutions.

Whether you’re managing a chronic lung condition, recovering from a respiratory infection, or simply want to breathe better, taking intentional steps to support and improve lung function can go a long way.

One of the best things you can do to improve lung health is to not smoke. If you don’t, that’s great. If you do, quitting is the quickest way to improve their health, according to the American Lung Association

But you can take other steps, too. Here at Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology Associates in Tampa and Brandon, Florida, our pulmonologists share 3 resolutions for breathing better in 2026.

Resolution #1: Move more for better breathing

Exercise helps your lungs work better. If you struggle to breathe because of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), physical activity may feel intimidating, but movement is one of the best tools for better breathing.

Regular physical activity strengthens your respiratory muscles, improves circulation to the lungs, and enhances lung capacity.

You don’t have to train for a marathon to get benefits. Start with what feels manageable. For example, you might start with a 10-minute walk during your lunch break or after dinner. As your stamina improves, bump it up to 20 minutes a day.

Cycling, swimming, and strength training also benefit lung health.

If you suffer from exercise-induced asthma (EIA), also called exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), our team can create a personalized plan that helps you breathe comfortably and stay active.

Resolution #2: Reduce exposure to pollutants and irritants

The quality of the air you breathe indoors and out also affects lung health. Protect your lungs by minimizing exposure to irritants and pollutants.

Use air purifiers with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters indoors to remove irritating airborne particles. You also want to dust and vacuum regularly and clean or replace the air filters in your air conditioning unit. Choose natural cleaning products to limit exposure to harsh chemicals.

Before heading out, check the air quality index (AQI) and consider limiting outdoor activity when levels are high. Also, avoid working out in areas with heavy car traffic, where pollution levels are higher.

Resolution #3: Be proactive

Whether or not you have a lung condition, preventive care is essential for maintaining healthy lungs. Be proactive by:

  • Staying up-to-date with flu vaccines
  • Getting COVID-19 boosters when recommended
  • Following your treatment plan as prescribed

Seeing your pulmonologist regularly also helps you stay ahead of potential problems. We can review your treatment plan, evaluate lung health, and make personalized adjustments to support better breathing and quality of life.

New Year's resolutions often center around health, but weight and diet aren’t the only areas that matter. Your lungs deserve attention, too.
